About this resource...
Patrimonio Nacional de España administers and manages the assets ceded by the Crown to the State, preserving its right of use and having, among others, a triple objective: to make available to all citizens one of the most important cultural ensembles in Europe; to conserve and restore its movable and immovable historical assets and to preserve and respect the environment, flora and fauna of the forests and gardens it administers.
Patrimonio Nacional manages eight Royal Palaces, five Royal Country Residences and ten Monasteries and Convents founded by the Crown, as well as 20,500 hectares of forest and 589 hectares of historic gardens, of which 154 have been recognised as World Heritage Cultural Landscapes. It also manages the movable property and Art Collections preserved in these places, as well as the property assigned for the use and service of the Crown and the donations made to the State by His Majesty the King.
The Royal Sites are used for the most important State ceremonies and official acts of the Kingdom of Spain. The most outstanding are those held at the Royal Palace in Madrid.
The National Heritage Museums at the Royal Sites are open to the public. More than three million people visit them every year, making the institution one of Spain's leading cultural organisations.
